We all know that IVF is not a cheap.  But do you know how to double your chances of a successful IVF treatment?  So you don’t have to go through the process time and time again.

You need 90 days to prepare for IVF, this prepares your body for a pregnancy and gives your baby the best start in their development.  You prepare on all levels physical, mental and emotional.  Making sure your hormones are in balance, supporting your reproductive system, energizing kidneys, and liver.  Eating a diet that is rich is nutrition and taking the right supplements, rest and exercise.

The IVF clinic that you have chosen will do everything they can to get you to embryo transfer day.

The clinics think when you leave them with your tiny embryos in place that you are pregnant, you just have to wait the 2 weeks to confirm this,  but this doesn’t always happen.  Put this plan into place to help IVF work.

Let’s create a pre-IVF fertility plan – It takes up to 3 months to prepare

Detox your body – start by drinking water with lemon every morning.  Have relaxing Epsom salt bath add a cup of Epsom salt, 10 drops of lavender oil or tea tree oil.  Or if you suffer from bad cramping period pain, mix 4 tsp of almond oil with 8 drops of lemon essential oils rub around your stomach clockwise.  Go to your local healthy food shop and get a detox program.  Detoxing your body helps restore balance to your reproductive system

Start Eating Healthy – Look at what you are eating. Could you be eating healthier?  Try and eat organic foods, lots of green leafy vegetables, broccoli, kale, green beans, avocado, they are full of antioxidants this helps your body produce really good healthy eggs and sperm.  Antioxidants fight free radicals that damage your egg and sperm cells.  Cut down on sugar and processed foods, introduce fish at least twice a week sea bass is brilliant for fertility. A well-balanced diet will create good quality blood to supply the uterus, eggs, and sperm increases protein and nutrient secretion around implantation, which your embryos will love.  A change in your diet increases your chances of a successful IVF.  Remember it is best to change your diet in small steps cause you are changing life long habits and this can sometimes take time.  Do not be hard on yourselves.

Acupuncture – it is now proven that acupuncture is one of the best ways to enhance your success rates by up to 50%.  Acupuncture reduces your stress, improves ovarian function, increases blood supply to your ovaries to help improve the quality of your eggs and sperm.  For the best results with acupuncture, you need three months of treatment before transfer, it really supports you on your IVF journey and more often than not you get pregnant without needing IVF.

Acupuncture is used on the morning of transfer and post transfer, studies have shown that women who had acupuncture before and after embryo transfer have a 44% success rate compared to 29% of those who don’t.  Then you need a treatment between day 5 to 7 post transfer.  Seriously what have you got to lose?

Kidneys are a key element in trying to get pregnant and according to the Chinese medicine clock they are most active between the hours of 5 pm and 7 pm so this is the time to take it easy and relax, do not do tough workouts, the best is a gentle swim, as the kidneys are associated with water.

When you get pregnant the kidneys support your pregnancy especially in the first 12 weeks so it's important to continue to take it easy at the kidney energy time.

I love this tip have Sex – I meet so many couples on their IVF journey who forget to have SEX.  This is a very important part of your relationship and this is how you get pregnant.  I know I am being a bit facetious. But the benefits of sex are huge for the feel good factor and endorphin buzz helps with stress, keeps you close and think of the fun you have.  Plus you could get pregnant.

Supplements – Fertility muli-vitamins, co-enzyme Q10, Vitamine D, all important in fertilization and the implantation process.  Help FSH levels by taking wheat grass. Royal jelly helps produce good quality eggs.  Insodial helps the quality of sperm and eggs.  Folic acid for both of you, research shows this prevents neural tube defects, such as spina bifida.

Exercise -  is important during IVF.  To give you the best chance a women's BMI should be between 20 – 25 if it's higher or lower you can increase your risk of an imbalance of your hormones.  It is very important to listen to your body about the type of exercise you should do that day if you have a stressful day you need more gentle exercise, swimming or walking.  If you have had an easier day then more strenuous exercise like a run.  Exercise is a great way to relieve stress and clear the head.  When you are going thought the IVF cycle you need to cut down on your exercise to a minimum, gentle walking is the best.

Men – You can help your sperm too.  Don’t put phones in your pockets, laptops on your knees, don’t wear tight clothing, all can cause damage to the sperm.  Make sure you drink plenty of water dehydration can damage sperm.  Take a good male fertility muti-vitamin and folic acid.  Start eating a healthy diet full of antioxidants to fight the free radicals that damage those precious sperm cells.

Have a plan fo the 2-week wait – This is the hardest part because you have been in the clinic a lot over the last few weeks, now you are left on your own to wait with no direction of what to do.  Plan things to do, or just sit back and take it easy you are allowed to do this.  Visualize what is happening your body.

Go on a date – sometimes this is something we forget to do when doing IVF, but when you go on a date you will talk to each other, talk about your fears, what you want in the future, etc, this really helps with the stress of IVF.  Sometimes it is really hard for the man, because you are the one doing everything taking your medication, going to the appointments in the clinic, getting acupuncture, he can be left on the sidelines a bit and might not completely understand how you feel, or even worse when he sees you are upset, makes an excuse to do something else, avoiding the situation.  This is not either of your faults, but if you communicate with each other then at least you know what is going on inside your heads.  You both are not mind readers.  Remember he does care but he might not show it the way you think he should this is why it is some important to talk.  By the way, your date doesn’t have to be a fancy restaurant, just a walk is great.

Ladies I am guilty of this as well, remember to give your man a chance to speak, and really listen to what he has to say you will actually be very surprised.

Stop smoking and drinking alcohol – both have a serious impact on your reproductive health causing damage to the quality of the sperm and egg cells. Also affecting the lining of the womb, having an aging effect on your eggs (this is not good if your AMH is already low) Studies also show it could cause miscarriage.  Is it worth the risk?

Egg collection day –  Try and have a good night sleep the night before, eat a good breakfast meditate go for a walk, try and stay relaxed this is all good for your eggs, even talk to them tell them what is expected of them (this might sound crazy but it does help). Remember you have done everything you can at this point and it is down to nature now to do her job.

We are finally here Transfer Day – Keep yourself nice and warm especially your tummy, make sure you eat a good breakfast, that morning, and try and keep yourself nice and relaxed, listen to a meditation or music.  It always good to have a good laugh when the transfer is done, watch something funny.

Yahoo the embryos are back in your womb and it takes 2 to 3 days for implantation to take place, make sure you get as much rest as you can, go to bed early, this really helps cortisol levels down.   Give yourself the best shot at this, do not feel guilty that you have taken time off in this 2-week wait, the world is still going to be there, nothing will have changed, only you could be pregnant.

Do lots of visualization, give yourself 10 minutes every day to do this especially in the 2-week wait.  Trust that your body can get pregnant.

Take care
